The Bakersfield Condors split a weekend home series against the Tucson Roadrunners, picking up three of a possible four points.
Tucson won 3-2 in overtime on Friday, but Condors goaltender Matt Tompkins stopped all 30 Roadrunner shots in a 2-0 victory on Saturday at Dignity Health Arena. In all, the Condors had a two-day total of 12,000 fans attending the two games.
The Roadrunners took Bakersfield to overtime for the fifth time in the Condors’ last seven games. A wild 2-1 first period saw both teams combine for three power-play goals. After Tucson scored the game’s first goal, Isaac Howard and then Quinn Hutson both scored with the man advantage. It was Howard’s 16th goal of the season and Hutson’s 26th.
After a scoreless second period, Tucson tied the game 8:34 into the third period and the teams went to overtime. Andrew Agozzino scored the game-winning goal at 3:47 for the Roadrunners. Bakersfield is 6-9 in overtime games.
Bakersfield’s two goals on Saturday came from Rhett Pitlick in the first period and James Hamblin’s 23rd goal of the season with 2:59 left in the game for an insurance tally. Seth Griffith and Atro Leppanen assisted on the second goal. Pitlick’s seventh goal of the season was assisted by Damien Carfagna.
Saturday’s win improved the Condors’ record to 30-17-10 and gave them 70 points in the Pacific Division standings. Ontario (76 points), Colorado (74) and San Jose (72) are ahead of Bakersfield.
The Condors are off now until a weekend road trip to Texas to play 5 p.m. games against the Central Division’s Stars on Friday and Saturday. After a March 20 road game at San Diego, the Condors’ next home game is at 7 p.m. March 21 against Calgary.
CSUB baseball
The Roadrunners opened the Big West Conference portion of their season schedule this past weekend, hosting Cal State Fullerton.
A tight 5-3 game Friday went to the Titans, but CSUB got home runs from Evan Cloyd, Nick Mascaro and Kanoa Morisaki to claim Saturday’s game 9-3. In Sunday’s rubber game, the Titans had a seven-run second inning en route to a 13-7 win to take two of the three games.
CSUB (6-10, 1-2 Big West) led 2-1 in the opener, but Fullerton got a run in the seventh inning, a pair of eighth-inning runs due to two CSUB errors and another run in the top of the ninth. CSUB had a chance to do big damage in the bottom of the ninth and did get one run with the bases loaded, but Fullerton got out of it.
Following CSUB’s power display in Saturday’s win, the Titans led 10-0 after three innings on Sunday. The Roadrunners got a run across in the fourth. It was 12-2 in the top of the sixth, but CSUB got two runs in the bottom of the sixth and had a four-run seventh inning. Despite the 13-7 loss, CSUB did outhit the Titans 17-13, but infielders committed four errors to help Fullerton (6-9, 2-1).
CSUB will host a special 11 a.m. Education Day non-conference game today against Orange County’s Westcliff University.
CSUB wrestling
The Roadrunners finished fourth of four at Friday’s one-day Pac-12 Conference Championships at Cal Poly and there will be no CSUB representation at the upcoming NCAA Division I Championship Tournament in Cleveland later this month.
It’s the second time in three years that the program has not sent at least one wrestler to the NCAAs.
CSUB, which wrestles with Oregon State, Arkansas-Little Rock and Cal Poly in the Pac-12, had no wrestlers reach the finals in any of the 10 weight classes.
Oregon State won the team title with 92½ points and has six wrestlers advancing to NCAAs. Little Rock was next with 81 points and three wrestlers, Cal Poly was third with 73 and has three qualifiers for the NCAAs. CSUB was last with 27 points.
CSUB softball
The softball team lost its Big West Conference-opening series at Long Beach State, falling 9-3 in Friday’s opener, and then splitting the Saturday doubleheader, winning the opener 7-1, and losing game two in six innings 9-1.
In the victory, the Roadrunners broke open a scoreless game with a six-run fifth inning.
Two runs came on a fielder’s choice, another on a fielding error by the Beach, an RBI single by Cailee Carr and a two-run double by Hannah Garcia. CSUB pushed across another run in the sixth.
LBSU scored in the seventh to avoid the shutout.
Cedes Saldana threw all seven innings, allowing five hits, the lone run and she struck out five, but walked two. Saldana pitched in all three games.
The Roadrunners will have their Big West home-opening weekend series Friday and Saturday against Cal State Northridge. Friday’s game is at 2:30 p.m. Saturday’s doubleheader is at noon and 2:30 p.m.
CSUB M/W basketball
Both Roadrunner basketball teams’ seasons ended Saturday with Big West Conference losses to Cal Poly.
The host Mustangs routed the CSUB men 108-76, getting 62 points in the first half alone.
Cal Poly (14-18, 10-10 Big West) had seven players score in double figures, led by Hamad Mousa’s 23. CSUB (8-24 overall, 2-18 Big West) was led by Dailin Smith’s 24. Ron Jessamy had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Roadrunners ended the season with a 15-game losing streak.
The women’s game, played at the Icardo Center, saw Cal Poly get only its second Big West victory of the season, 66-54, against the Roadrunners. The teams split their conference games this season.
Marley Langi led CSUB (7-23, 2-18) with 17 points. Chrishawn Coleman had 15.
The Roadrunners were coached by Ray Alvarado for the second straight game. Head coach Ari Wideman was placed on paid administrative leave last week.
Cal Poly (4-26, 2-18) was led by Charish Thompson’s 19 points.
CSUB beach volleyball
The Long Beach State Invitational proved to be a tough time for the Roadrunners, who dropped all four matches they played, two on Friday and two on Saturday.
Loyola Marymount, ranked ninth, swept CSUB in Friday’s opener 5-0, followed by a 4-1 defeat to Santa Clara. CSUB was competitive with No. 14 Stetson (Florida) in a 3-2 setback, but Alabama-Birmingham defeated the Roadrunners, 4-1 in the last match of the day and tournament.
CSUB (3-8) will head to Malibu for two days of invitational matches this Friday and Saturday against Hope International and Pepperdine.
BC baseball
Antelope Valley salvaged one game in its three-game Western State Conference series with Bakersfield, taking Saturday’s series finale 12-10 at AVC. BC outscored AVC 34-29 in the three games.
All 22 runs in Saturday’s game came between the second and sixth innings. The teams combined for 26 hits and seven errors. Jordan Brito, Nick Martin and Liam O’Reilly each had three hits. O’Reilly had three RBIs and Brady Baird had two. Landon McDonald did not hit a home run — he has 10 this season — but went 1 for 4 with an RBI and two runs.
BC (10-10, 2-1 WSC) opens a three-game WSC series at home at 2 p.m. today against Citrus.
BC softball
It was a tough doubleheader Saturday for the Renegades. The team traveled to Palomar College and returned with two losses, both reaching only six innings.
The first game was competitive as BC led 2-1 when Palomar struck for nine runs in the sixth inning.
BC had only six hits, but Lexi Rolin drove in two runs. Isabella Harrison had two hits.
In the second game, Palomar won 12-3, getting a six-run first inning and a five-run third.
Again, Rolin and Harrison had hits to drive in a few runs for BC (10-10).
The Renegades return to Western State Conference play at 2 p.m. today at LA Valley College.
