California’s new plastic recycling rules spark fights from all sides

California has set a 2032 deadline for plastic producers to make all packaging recyclable or compostable. This is the most ambitious deadline in the U.S., but it faces criticism from both environmental advocates and producers. Advocates argue the rules don't go far enough, while producers say they are too strict and costly. Some environmental groups plan to sue, saying the rules allow harmful recycling methods. The law requires producers to reduce single-use plastics and invest in recycling infrastructure. The Circular Action Alliance is tasked with developing a plan to meet these goals. The next major test comes in June when the alliance submits its plan to CalRecycle.
