The war in Iran threatens to disrupt international travel to Asia, where the tourism industry has yet to fully recover from the the COVID‑19 pandemic. Airspace closures, the rerouting of flights around the Middle East and elevated jet fuel costs are driving up airfares, causing flight cancelations and lengthening travel times on key routes between Europe and Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and other destinations. A recent report by the United Nations Development Program says higher airfares and weaker travel confidence can quickly affect livelihoods and public revenues in economies where visitor arrivals are a major source of jobs, income and foreign currency.

Canadian officials have reported that one of four Canadians returning from a cruise ship with a hantavirus outbreak has a “presumptive positive” test result. Confirmation from the National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg is expected soon. British Columbia's public health officer says the patient in their 70s is stable with mild symptoms. Her departure follows the resignation of FDA Commissioner Marty Makary earlier in the week. The FDA has been rocked for months by layoffs, leadership upheavals and scientific controversies. Hoeg and Makary both came to the agency as medical contrarians and critics of COVID-19 health measures. That stance aligned with health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s agenda.

Marty Makary is resigning as President Donald Trump's Food and Drug Administration chief. The surgeon and health researcher's tenure had drawn complaints from pharmaceutical executives, anti-abortion activists and other Trump allies. The President said Tuesday that Makary “was having some difficulty” but ”he’s going to go on and he’s going to do well.” Makary came to prominence as an outspoken critic of public health measures during the COVID pandemic, when he appeared on Fox News Channel. But at the FDA, Makary failed to win the staff's confidence after mass layoffs, leadership changes and a series of controversies involving vaccines, drugs and electronic cigarettes.
