State lawmakers are considering a regulatory delay allowing California oil producers more time to put in new monitoring systems in compliance with a contentious law that was stalled a year and a half before taking effect this summer.

A budget trailer bill amended this week would give state regulatory agencies — and by extension, oil producers — an extra four years to set up leak detection equipment and other measures outlined in 2022's Senate Bill 1137.
