For years, Jon Blystone had urged his father, a U.S. Army veteran, to sign up for his turn on one of Honor Flight Kern County’s famous flights to the nation’s capital to visit its war memorials and other historic sights.

“He always said, ‘I didn’t see combat,’” the younger Blystone remembered. “He wanted to save his seat for someone who did.”
