Maya Hernandez appears in Kern County Superior Court on July 1.

The death of a 1-year-old who Bakersfield police say was unattended in a vehicle during the sweltering heat is the latest reminder of a tragedy that claims dozens of young lives around the country every year.

On Tuesday, the Kern County coroner’s office identified Visalia resident Amillio Gutierrez as the child found unresponsive shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday after being left in a vehicle in the 100 block of South Real Road. He later died after being taken to a local hospital. Police have reported his 2-year-old brother, who was with him inside the vehicle, survived.
