A running debate about Kern’s economic health has been rekindled by a recent study ranking the county at the very bottom of the nation’s 100 largest metropolitan areas in terms of job opportunities and earnings potential.

On one hand, there’s no denying one of the primary conclusions of the study released this summer by San Francisco-based employment screening company Checkr. That is, no other big-city region struggles as much with low pay and limited employment.
